Overview

Ponte da Arrábida is a concrete arch bridge connecting the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia over the Douro River. At the time of its inauguration in 1963, it held the world record for the longest reinforced concrete arch span. The bridge features an internal walkway structure that allows for guided climbing tours to the top of its arch. The climb provides a panoramic vantage point over the river estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. The structure is 615 meters long and 27 meters wide. It was designed by the engineer Edgar Cardoso to support the heavy traffic of the Via de Cintura Interna. The bridge remains a significant landmark of 20th-century Portuguese civil engineering.
