Interesting facts
1

The walls were never actually tested in a major military siege, which contributed to their excellent state of preservation.

2

During the 19th century, the Duchess of Lucca, Maria Luisa of Bourbon, converted the military ramparts into the public botanical promenade seen today.

3

The base of the walls is roughly 30 meters wide, designed to absorb the kinetic energy of artillery fire from the 16th and 17th centuries.

4

The system includes underground brick tunnels and vaults, some of which are accessible to the public and have historically been used for everything from military storage to wine aging.

5

The promenade is planted with over 2,000 trees, primarily chestnut and plane trees, creating a continuous shaded corridor.

Overview

The Mura di Lucca are a 4.2-kilometer long Renaissance-era defensive fortification system that completely encircles the historic center of Lucca. Unlike many other European cities that dismantled their fortifications for urban expansion, Lucca preserved these walls, which were constructed between 1504 and 1648. Today, the ramparts function as a continuous, tree-lined elevated park, offering a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly promenade above the city streets. The structure features eleven bastions and six main gates, providing a unique vantage point over the city's medieval urban fabric and surrounding Tuscan landscape. The walls serve as a social hub for locals, who use the path for exercise, socializing, and leisure.

Insider tips

Rent a bicycle from one of the local shops near the city gates to complete a full circuit in roughly 20-30 minutes.

Visit the bastions to find hidden playgrounds and small picnic areas used by local families.

If walking the entire loop, plan for frequent stops at the various access points that lead down into the city's historic piazzas.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk on the grassy slopes of the bastions, as this can cause erosion and is often discouraged by local authorities.

Etiquette

Cyclists must yield to pedestrians on the promenade; maintain a respectful volume as the path passes near residential buildings.
