Interesting facts
1

The waterfall is one of the Three Great Waterfalls of Japan.

2

The base of the falls creates a distinct microclimate with significantly lower temperatures than the surface level.

3

The water flow is artificially regulated by a hydroelectric power station located upstream to prevent flooding and manage lake levels.

4

The geological structure consists of multiple layers of volcanic rock that allow water to emerge mid-cliff.

5

The area is famous for significant ice formations in winter, caused by the freezing of the seeping spring waters on the cliff face.

Overview

The Kegon Waterfalls Paid Observation Deck is accessed via a 100-meter-deep elevator that descends through solid rock to the base of the falls. It provides a direct, ground-level view of the 97-meter-tall waterfall, which is the primary outlet for Lake Chuzenji. The falls were formed when the Daiya River was diverted by lava flows from the eruption of Mount Nantai. The observation deck consists of a multi-level concrete platform constructed to withstand the spray and high humidity of the waterfall basin. Because of the geological positioning, the area features a collection of smaller 'twelve falls' (juuni-taki) that seep through the cliffside cracks surrounding the main cascade. The site is a designated place of scenic beauty within Nikko National Park.

Insider tips

Bring a waterproof shell or rain jacket, as the mist at the base of the falls can be heavy even on clear days.

Visit during the early morning hours to avoid the peak congestion of tour groups arriving by coach.

Expect to spend time at the top observation level as well, which offers a panoramic perspective of the gorge.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb or bypass the designated railings, as the cliff area is subject to falling debris.
