Interesting facts
1

2

It is historically significant as a site for 'kegon-no-taki' suicide incidents, which led to the installation of modern safety barriers.

3

The water volume fluctuates significantly based on the hydroelectric discharge from the upstream dam.

4

The observation deck provides a view of the basin, which remains frozen into ice pillars during mid-winter.

Overview

Kegon Waterfalls is one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls, formed where the Yukawa River drains Lake Chuzenji. The falls drop approximately 97 meters over a basalt cliff face. An elevator tunnel carries visitors 100 meters down through the rock to an observation deck located at the base of the waterfall. Twelve smaller secondary waterfalls seep through the cracks between the lava layers, creating a distinct visual effect known as 'twelve falls'. The water flow is controlled by a power station intake located upstream on Lake Chuzenji. The site is a designated Place of Scenic Beauty. It functions as the primary outlet for the lake's water levels.

Photo spot

The free observation platform at the top of the cliff offers the best full-scale view, while the base deck provides a sense of scale.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker or outer layer, as the spray and altitude make the base significantly cooler than the surface.

Visit during the peak autumn foliage season for the most vibrant color contrast against the basalt cliff.

The observation deck can become very misty; consider bringing a cloth to wipe down camera lenses.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb or bypass the safety barriers at the observation deck; the currents in the basin are extremely dangerous.

Good to know

The elevator operates year-round but may close temporarily during severe winter storms or hazardous icy conditions.
