Overview

Mount Nantai is a 2,486-meter stratovolcano situated on the northern shore of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko National Park. The mountain is an active volcano, last erupting approximately 7,000 years ago. It serves as the physical manifestation of a deity for the nearby Futarasan Shrine, which maintains a secondary shrine at the summit. The ascent is categorized as a strenuous hike, involving a significant elevation gain of roughly 1,200 meters from the trailhead. The trail is primarily composed of rocky terrain and loose volcanic gravel, requiring sturdy footwear. Reaching the summit provides panoramic views of the Oku-Nikko region, including Senjogahara Marshland and the surrounding peaks of the Tochigi Prefecture. Climbers must register their ascent at the trailhead shrine office and pay an entrance fee before beginning the hike. The mountain path is traditionally opened for climbing each spring and closed during the winter months.
