Interesting facts
1

The ropeway provides a singular view of the Kegon Falls, which is otherwise difficult to see in its entirety from the ground level.

2

The name 'Akechidaira' is derived from the legend that the monk Tenkai, who served the Tokugawa shogunate, named the area after the Akechi clan.

3

The observation deck overlooks the Daiya River valley, which serves as a natural corridor for the drainage of Lake Chuzenji.

4

The facility is strategically positioned at the summit of the second Irohazaka, a famous winding road known for its sharp hairpin turns.

Overview

The Akechidaira Ropeway offers a panoramic aerial vantage point overlooking Lake Chuzenji, the Kegon Falls, and the steep Nantai volcanic peaks. Located on the ascent to the Okunikko highlands, the cable car ride lasts approximately three minutes to reach the observation deck. The site serves as one of the few locations in the Nikkō region providing a simultaneous view of both the mountain landscape and the basin below. The ropeway was opened in 1958 to facilitate tourism access to the Irohazaka Slope summit areas. It remains a primary vantage point for observing the drastic shift in autumn foliage colors as they progress down the mountain. The observation platform is situated at an elevation of approximately 1,373 meters. Accessibility is primarily via the ropeway, as no direct pedestrian trails connect the base station to the summit platform for the general public.

Insider tips

Visit on a weekday morning to avoid heavy traffic congestion on the Irohazaka mountain road.

Check local weather reports specifically for the mountain summit, as thick fog frequently obscures the view even when it is clear at the base.

Use the viewing binoculars provided on the deck to spot the distant waterfall cascades.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike up the ropeway path, as it is steep, restricted, and not maintained for recreational walking.

Good to know

May be suspended during severe weather, including high winds or heavy snowfall.
