Overview

Hobe Fort, also known as Fort San Domingo's auxiliary, is a coastal defense battery constructed in the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. It features a unique earth-covered design intended to camouflage the structure from naval bombardment. The site was built under the direction of the Chinese official Liu Ming-chuan to protect the Tamsui River estuary. It served as a vital strategic point during the Sino-French War. Visitors can explore the preserved brick barracks, ammunition storage areas, and earthen ramparts. The grounds currently host a permanent historical photo exhibit detailing the fort's military evolution. It is one of the few surviving Western-style fortifications in northern Taiwan built by Chinese authorities. The structure is characterized by its sunken design, which remains below ground level to minimize its profile.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes as the terrain around the fort consists of uneven dirt paths and stone surfaces.

Bring mosquito repellent, as the fort's grassy embankments and thick foliage often harbor insects.

Plan your visit for a weekday to avoid crowds, as the narrow tunnels can feel confined during peak weekend hours.

What to avoid

Do not mistake the fort for the nearby Fort San Domingo, which is a separate colonial-era site closer to the harbor.
