Overview

Pálava Protected Landscape Area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in South Moravia, characterized by limestone klippe hills and steppe habitats. The region is the northernmost point of the Pannonian forest-steppe, housing rare flora such as the endemic Pálava centaury. The area includes the Pavlovské vrchy hills, which reach a maximum elevation of 554 meters at Děvín. The limestone substrate supports diverse thermophilic plant communities and protected insect species. Historically, the area features ruins of medieval castles such as Děvičky and Sirotčí hrádek. It remains a significant region for viticulture, with vineyards integrated into the landscape. The area is intersected by several marked hiking trails connecting the primary ridges. The site is managed by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic.
