Interesting facts
1

The Minaret was built on unstable, swampy ground, requiring a foundation made of hundreds of wooden piles driven into the soil.

2

Architect Josef Hardtmuth designed the tower as a 'Turkish' folly, a popular architectural trend in 18th-century Europe, despite never visiting the Middle East.

3

The interior is decorated with Islamic-style motifs and calligraphy, which were purely decorative and intended to impress guests of the Liechtenstein estate.

4

During the winter, the tower is closed to prevent frost damage to the sandstone and ensure visitor safety on the steep staircases.

5

It is technically classified as a lookout tower rather than a religious edifice, making it one of the few examples of this style built in the Habsburg Monarchy.

Overview

The Minaret in Lednice is the tallest structure of its kind in Central Europe, standing at 62 meters. Built between 1797 and 1802 by architect Josef Hardtmuth, it serves as the centerpiece of the romantic Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape. The tower is constructed primarily of sandstone and features three gallery levels offering panoramic views of the surrounding UNESCO-protected parkland. Despite its name, the structure was never used for religious purposes, serving instead as a viewing tower and a whimsical architectural folly for the Liechtenstein family. Visitors must climb 302 winding steps to reach the highest gallery. The exterior displays distinct Moorish revival influence, featuring horseshoe arches and ornate geometric decorations. It is situated on the edge of the Zámecký rybník pond, integrated into the expansive castle garden complex. The building is unique for its unconventional design in a region otherwise dominated by Baroque and Renaissance architecture.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, non-slip footwear as the 302-step spiral staircase is narrow and can be slippery.

Check the weather before starting the walk from the chateau, as high winds can lead to the tower's closure for safety reasons.

Bring a pair of binoculars to identify distant landmarks within the UNESCO Lednice-Valtice landscape from the top gallery.

What to avoid

Attempting to walk to the tower during heavy rain, as the park paths can become muddy and the tower stairs are restricted.

Good to know

Open seasonally from spring through autumn; closed during the winter months.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet volume on the stairs and respect others by allowing space for passing in the narrow sections.
