Overview

Nationalpark Berchtesgaden is Germany's only alpine national park, situated in the Bavarian Alps along the border with Austria. The landscape is dominated by the Watzmann massif, reaching 2,713 meters in elevation. Lake Königssee, a deep glacial lake surrounded by steep rock faces, is located within the park boundaries. The park serves as a protected habitat for golden eagles, chamois, ibex, and marmots. The iconic pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä is accessible primarily by electric boat across the lake. The terrain includes over 260 kilometers of hiking trails ranging from gentle valley walks to alpine climbing routes. The park incorporates the Haus der Berge visitor center as its primary information hub. It remains a core component of the UNESCO Berchtesgaden Alps Biosphere Reserve.
