Overview

The Zauberwald, or Magic Forest, is a protected geological area located along the Hintersee river in Ramsau. The terrain was formed approximately 3,500 years ago during a massive rockslide from the Hochkalter mountain massif. The trail winds through a forest of moss-covered boulders and irregular rock formations interspersed with evergreen trees. The river Hinterseer Ache flows through the center of the ravine, creating several small waterfalls and turbulent sections. It is a designated National Park area within the Berchtesgaden region. The path is well-maintained and connects the village of Ramsau to the shores of Lake Hintersee. Visitors can observe the unique post-glacial landscape characterized by microclimates supporting specific moss and fern species.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes as the path crosses uneven, rocky terrain and exposed tree roots.

Combine the walk with a visit to the neighboring Lake Hintersee for a full circular route.

Bring a camera with a tripod if you wish to capture the long-exposure effect of the rushing stream waters.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb or scramble on the unstable, moss-covered boulders outside the designated path, as they can be slippery and hazardous.

Good to know

The path is generally accessible year-round, but sections may be closed or dangerous during heavy winter snowfall or spring melt floods.

Etiquette

Stay on the marked trails to protect the delicate moss and fern ecosystems; leave no waste in the protected National Park zone.
