Interesting facts
1

The forest contains a nursery that grows indigenous plants for rehabilitation projects within Table Mountain National Park.

2

It is historically significant as the site of early timber production for the Cape Colony, necessitating the introduction of pine and gum trees.

3

The forest floor is often covered in invasive ferns and specific fungi, which thrive in the high-humidity environment of the eastern slopes.

4

The area acts as a crucial buffer zone between the urban density of the Newlands suburb and the protected fynbos biomes higher up.

5

It is a frequent starting point for rescue operations conducted by Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) due to its proximity to popular mountain ascent routes.

Overview

Newlands Forest is a 21-hectare woodland preserve situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain within the Table Mountain National Park. The area consists primarily of non-indigenous pine plantations, though it transitions into Afromontane forest further up the mountain slopes. It serves as a primary access point for several hiking trails, including the path to the Newlands Ravine and the Contour Path leading toward Kirstenbosch. The forest is managed by SANParks and is a key catchment area for the local water supply. Many trails within the forest are popular for trail running and dog walking, provided permits are obtained. The vegetation features a mix of silvicultural history and protected indigenous flora. It remains one of the few urban forests in Cape Town that allows direct entry into the wider Table Mountain trail network.

Insider tips

Download an offline map, as cell phone reception is inconsistent once you ascend into the ravine areas.

Purchase a My Activity Permit from SANParks if you plan to walk dogs or cycle on designated forest tracks.

Carry at least one liter of water per person, even for short walks, as the forest paths can be steep and physically demanding.

What to avoid

Do not leave valuables inside parked vehicles at the trailheads, as these are known hotspots for opportunistic theft.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to prevent erosion; keep dogs on a leash unless in designated zones; pack out all trash.
