The limestone rock walls are part of the Klippen Belt, a complex geological structure in the Western Carpathians.

Overview

Manínska tiesňava is the narrowest canyon in Slovakia, formed by the Manínsky potok stream cutting through the Manínska vrchovina mountains. The limestone gorge features vertical walls reaching heights of up to 400 meters. The road running through the canyon serves as a narrow corridor, at its tightest point barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass. It is a National Nature Reserve protecting unique flora influenced by temperature inversions, allowing mountain plant species to grow at unusually low altitudes. The site is a popular destination for rock climbers, with numerous bolted routes on the cliff faces. The path continues towards the village of Kostolec and the Súľovské vrchy protected landscape area. Geological erosion has created distinct karst formations including rock towers and scree slopes.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip as the paths can be slippery near the stream.

Bring a light jacket even in summer, as the deep gorge floor remains significantly cooler than the surrounding area.

Park in the designated zones at the entrance to avoid blocking the narrow canyon road.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to drive through during peak holiday weekends, as the narrow road becomes highly congested.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile limestone flora and keep noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing nesting birds.
