Overview

Castle Lietava is one of the largest castle ruins in Slovakia, constructed in the 13th century as a strategic administrative and military fortress. The site is currently managed by a non-profit association dedicated to the systematic stabilization and conservation of its masonry. The complex is divided into an upper castle and an extensive outer ward protected by multiple bastions and gates. Architectural remains include distinct Gothic and Renaissance modifications from the 16th and 17th centuries. It served as the residence of the noble Thurzo family for several generations. The site is located on a narrow limestone ridge in the Súľov Mountains. Much of the site remains unrestored, preserving its original ruin state for visitors to explore. It is accessible only via hiking trails from the surrounding villages of Lietava or Lietavská Svinná.
