The site was once the property of Portland businessman Guy Webster Talbot and his wife, Geraldine. The couple donated the initial 125 acres to the State of Oregon in 1929. The terrain consists of dense forest, basalt cliffs, and riverine environments. It is currently managed as a protected natural area with limited developed facilities.
