Overview

Belfast Castle is a Scottish Baronial style mansion situated on the slopes of Cave Hill Country Park, 400 feet above sea level. Constructed between 1867 and 1870, it replaced an earlier Norman castle destroyed by fire in the city center. The building was designed by architect John Lanyon for the third Marquess of Donegall. In 1934, the property was gifted to the Belfast Corporation, now the Belfast City Council. The estate underwent a multi-million-pound restoration in the 1980s. The site includes extensive formal gardens, a visitor center, and a restaurant facility. The grounds provide panoramic views overlooking the city of Belfast and Belfast Lough. The architecture features sandstone exterior finishes and decorative turrets.
