Built in 1810–1812 for Prince Johann I of Liechtenstein, the structure was designed by architect Josef Hardtmuth. The building houses a museum dedicated to the archaeological finds from the surrounding area, which was once a major fortified settlement of the 9th century. The site is situated within the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can view excavations of Slavic dwellings and defensive ramparts surrounding the castle. The interior features exhibits on local history, forestry, and hunting culture. The castle is surrounded by extensive floodplain forests of the Dyje River.
