Interesting facts
1

Sunj Bay is one of the few naturally occurring sandy beaches in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, where pebble and stone beaches are more common.

2

The shallow depth of the water remains knee-deep for approximately 100 meters, making it a natural playground for non-swimmers and families.

3

Lopud island, where the beach is located, prohibits all motorized cars, resulting in a unique acoustic environment dominated by nature sounds.

4

The island of Lopud hosts the ruins of 30 historical churches and two monasteries, though these are located away from the beach site.

Overview

Beach Sunj is a sandy beach located on the southern side of Lopud Island in the Elafiti archipelago, Croatia. It is one of the few natural sandy beaches in the Dubrovnik region, characterized by its exceptionally shallow waters that extend far into the Adriatic Sea. The seabed consists of fine, light-colored sand, creating a turquoise water effect. The bay is enclosed by limestone hills covered in Mediterranean scrub and pine forests. Basic facilities include a few beach bars, sunbed rentals, and a small restaurant. The beach is accessible only by foot, bicycle, or golf cart taxi from the main village of Lopud on the opposite side of the island. There is no vehicle traffic on the island. The area is naturally protected from strong winds due to its orientation.

Photo spot

The elevated path overlooking the bay on the trail leading from the Lopud village provides a panoramic view of the crescent-shaped coastline.

Insider tips

Wear water shoes if you prefer to walk on the slightly rocky margins of the bay, though the center is fine sand.

Bring your own shade equipment if you prefer to avoid renting loungers, as natural shade on the beach itself is limited.

Pack water and snacks if visiting during peak season, as the few dining options can become crowded and limited in inventory.

What to avoid

Do not wait until the final boat of the day to head back to the main port, as capacity can be limited.

Good to know

Accessible year-round, though visitor services, bars, and restaurants only operate during the spring to autumn tourism season.

Etiquette

Standard beach etiquette applies; nudity is not permitted in the main public area, and visitors are expected to carry out their own trash.
