Overview

Lovrjenac Fortress is a standalone fortification situated on a 37-meter-high cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea, separate from the main Dubrovnik city walls. Historically known as 'Dubrovnik's Gibraltar,' it served as a critical defensive point against the Republic of Venice during the 11th century. The fortress walls facing the sea are up to 12 meters thick, while the walls facing the city are significantly thinner to ensure they could be destroyed by the main city artillery if the fortress were ever captured by invaders. Above the entrance gate, a Latin inscription translates to 'Liberty is not sold for all the gold in the world.' The site is constructed in an irregular triangular shape to conform to the jagged cliff edge. In contemporary times, the interior courtyard serves as a primary venue for theatrical performances, most notably the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. It is connected to the historical western approach of the city through the Pile area.
