Overview

Pile Gate serves as the primary land entrance to the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Dubrovnik. The structure consists of a double gate system, incorporating both an outer stone bridge and an inner Gothic-style archway. Originally constructed in the 15th century, the gate was once protected by a wooden drawbridge that was raised every night to secure the city. A stone statue of Saint Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik, stands in a niche above the inner gate. The site connects the modern city infrastructure directly to the historic Stradun, the city's main pedestrian thoroughfare. It acts as the central junction for visitors accessing the Dubrovnik City Walls and the historic center. The bridge spans a former moat that has been converted into a public garden and green space.

Insider tips

Use the gate as a central meeting point, but choose a side area to avoid obstructing the heavy pedestrian flow.

The area is the best starting point for accessing the City Walls ticket office located immediately to the left.

Expect high congestion during midday; plan to pass through early in the morning or late in the evening for better photos.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to park a vehicle anywhere near the gate as the area is strictly pedestrian-only and heavily monitored.
