The ruin was built as a 'follie' or artificial ruin to enhance the aesthetic landscape of the nearby Książ estate.
Architect Christian Wilhelm Tischbein designed the structure to incorporate authentic medieval architectural fragments.
During the 19th century, the site featured a functioning tavern and a collection of historical weapons to entertain guests.
The location was once erroneously believed to be the site of a 13th-century Piast dynasty stronghold, though archaeological evidence suggests a different origin.
The masonry incorporates repurposed stone from the original medieval Książ castle demolished in the 16th century.
The site was severely damaged by a fire in 1945 and remained in a state of rapid decay until stabilization works in 2014.
Its construction signaled the early stages of romanticized tourism in Lower Silesia.
Stary Książ is a romanticist ruin constructed in 1797–1799 by Hans Heinrich VI von Hochberg, situated on a limestone cliff above the Pełcznica River. It was intentionally designed to resemble a medieval fortress using materials from original castle ruins located in the area. The site served as a tourist attraction and hunting lodge for the Hochberg family during the 19th century. Extensive restoration efforts in the early 2010s stabilized the surviving walls and masonry elements. The ruins are located within the Książ Landscape Park, integrated into a larger trail system that connects to the main Książ Castle complex. Visitors can traverse stone archways and view defensive wall remnants that reflect 18th-century architectural mimicry. The structure occupies a strategic position on a narrow ridge, providing a vertical drop overlooking the river gorge. It remains a focal point for hikers navigating the forest trails surrounding the Wałbrzych region.
The viewpoint located on the opposite side of the bridge structure, capturing the ruins framed by the forest canopy.
Wear sturdy hiking boots as the approach involves uneven forest paths and loose gravel.
Bring a headlamp or flashlight if you intend to explore the interior wall segments, as natural light can be limited.
Carry drinking water and snacks, as there are no facilities available at the ruins themselves.
Do not attempt the shortcut descent through the steep forest slope; use the marked hiking trail to avoid injury.
Do not climb on unstable wall sections; stay within designated safety barriers.
