Overview

Vikos Gorge View Point, locally known as Oxya, offers a direct overlook into one of the world's deepest canyons relative to its width. It is located in the Vikos-Aoos National Park within the Pindus Mountains of Greece. The gorge reaches a maximum depth of approximately 1,000 meters while measuring only a few hundred meters across in some sections. This viewpoint is accessible via a short, stone-paved path from the end of the road near the village of Monodendri. The geological structure is defined by steep limestone walls and diverse endemic flora. It provides clear sightlines to the Voidomatis River bed far below.

Photo spot

The stone-walled overlook platform at the end of the trail provides the widest panoramic angle of the gorge.

Insider tips

Bring binoculars to spot the eagles and vultures often seen soaring below the rim.

Ensure you have sturdy walking shoes, as the path to the main viewing platform is rocky and uneven.

Visit on a clear, windless day, as high-altitude fog can obscure the canyon base entirely.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike down into the gorge from the viewpoint itself; use designated, marked trailheads near the villages for descent.

Good to know

Access may be restricted or dangerous during winter months due to heavy snow and ice on the mountain roads.

Etiquette

Stay behind the stone safety barriers at all times; do not approach the cliff edge for photographs.
