Overview

Lantau South Country Park covers 5,640 hectares of rugged terrain on Lantau Island, representing the largest country park in Hong Kong. It features a diverse landscape ranging from the island's high peaks, including Lantau Peak and Sunset Peak, to coastal areas overlooking the South China Sea. The park is a major hub for the Lantau Trail, a 70-kilometer circular route that traverses the island's interior. Vegetation is characterized by broad-leaved woodlands and shrublands, which provide habitats for local wildlife such as Rhesus macaques and various bird species. Visitors can access multiple mountain stream valleys and reservoirs located within the protected area. The park boundary encompasses the majority of the mountainous southern half of Lantau Island. It is managed by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for conservation and recreational purposes.

Insider tips

Carry at least two liters of water, as there are no shops or refill stations inside the interior trail sections.

Wear sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support to navigate the steep, uneven stone steps common to the Lantau Trail.

Download an offline topographical map, as cellular reception is inconsistent in the valleys and northern shadow of the peaks.

What to avoid

Attempting steep, exposed sections during summer midday heat or during T3 or higher typhoon signal alerts.

Etiquette

Practice 'Leave No Trace' principles, do not feed wild macaques, and stay on marked paths to prevent erosion.
