Overview

The Wisdom Path features 38 large wooden columns inscribed with the Heart Sutra, a foundational Mahayana Buddhist text. Arranged in an ∞ (infinity) pattern, these vertical logs represent the concept of 'emptiness' or 'formlessness'. The installation is located on the slope of Lantau Peak near Ngong Ping. Each column varies in height, with the tallest reaching 8 to 10 meters. The inscriptions were calligraphed by the renowned scholar Jao Tsung-I. The path provides a deliberate circular route for hikers to walk through the calligraphy. It serves as an outdoor meditative space integrated into the surrounding mountain landscape.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy walking shoes as the approach trail involves uneven, sloped terrain.

Carry plenty of water, as there are no vendor stalls or water fountains once you exit the Ngong Ping village area.

Bring sun protection and bug repellent, as the path is largely exposed and set within forested mountain slopes.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the walk in severe weather conditions, such as typhoons or heavy fog, as the hillside path becomes slippery and visibility drops significantly.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet tone as the site is considered a place for contemplation and spiritual reflection; refrain from climbing or sitting on the wooden columns.
