Known locally A quiet place for contemplation
Sehadet Mosque, Osmangazi, Ağaçlı Sk. No:15, 16040 Osmangazi̇/Bursa, Türkiye
It is frequently referred to as the 'Martyrdom Mosque' due to its proximity to the burial sites of the Ottoman dynasty's founders.
The mosque complex was deliberately positioned within the old citadel fortifications to emphasize the religious authority of the early Ottoman rulers.
The architectural layout reflects the transition from Seljuk to classical Ottoman style, utilizing a brick and stone masonry technique common in the late 1300s.
Sehadet Mosque is located within the Tophane district of Bursa, positioned inside the historic Bursa Citadel walls. Originally commissioned by Sultan Orhan Ghazi in the 14th century, it is historically significant as one of the earliest examples of Ottoman congregational mosque architecture. The structure is part of the larger Tophane cultural complex, which houses the tombs of Osman Ghazi and Orhan Ghazi. It underwent extensive restoration in the early 20th century to repair structural damage sustained during the Greek occupation of Bursa in the Turkish War of Independence. Its design features a traditional Ottoman multi-dome structure and a prominent portico. It remains an active site of worship for the local community and stands as a key component of the Bursa UNESCO World Heritage site property list.
