Overview

Beacon Rock State Park features the core of an ancient volcano, rising 848 feet above the Columbia River. The park is anchored by a 1.8-mile switchback trail constructed into the face of the basalt monolith. Originally built by Henry Biddle between 1915 and 1918, this trail provides a consistent grade to the summit. The park encompasses 5,100 acres of forest and riverside shoreline within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Visitors can access over 20 miles of hiking and equestrian trails beyond the main rock formation. The area serves as a significant geologic landmark formed by volcanic activity and subsequent glacial flooding. Rock climbing is permitted on specific faces of the monolith, regulated by state park guidelines. The site provides unobstructed views of the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge.

Photo spot

The summit provides a 360-degree panoramic view, while the riverbank at the base offers the best angle for capturing the scale of the monolith.

Insider tips

Start the ascent early in the morning during summer to avoid high heat and crowds on the narrow switchbacks.

Bring wind-resistant layers, as the summit is often significantly colder and windier than the trailhead.

Check the official Washington State Parks website for seasonal climbing closures related to falcon nesting.

What to avoid

Attempting the ascent during high winds or icy conditions, as the path is narrow and lacks guardrails in certain sections.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to prevent erosion, keep pets on a leash at all times, and pack out all trash.
