Interesting facts

  1. The cove is separated from the open sea by the tiny islet of Illa de sa Caleta, which creates a natural barrier and contributes to the calm water conditions.

  2. The seabed features a mix of seagrass meadows (Posidonia oceanica) and rocky patches, which are critical for water clarity and marine biodiversity in the Balearic Sea.

  3. Unlike larger commercial beaches in the area, Cala Xinxell lacks permanent beach club infrastructure on the sand itself, maintaining a more natural character.

  4. The geological structure of the surrounding cliffs consists of Miocene limestone, typical of the coastal regions of the Tramuntana foothills.

Overview

Cala Xinxell is a small, sheltered sandy cove situated on the southwestern coast of Mallorca, characterized by its exceptionally clear, turquoise waters and rocky cliff surroundings. The beach is a narrow stretch of sand nestled between the larger Caló des Macs and the Illa de sa Caleta islet, which is accessible by swimming at low tide. It is part of the Cas Català-Illetes coastline, known for its limestone formations and Mediterranean pine vegetation. The area remains relatively protected from strong winds due to its orientation and surrounding rocky outcrops. The seabed here transitions quickly from sand to rock, providing favorable conditions for snorkeling. While popular with local residents, it maintains a smaller scale compared to the neighboring main beaches of Illetes.

Insider tips

  • Bring water shoes to navigate the rocky sections of the shoreline comfortably.

  • Snorkel gear is highly recommended due to the high visibility and abundance of Mediterranean fish species near the rocks.

  • Visit on weekdays to avoid peak weekend crowds, as the limited sand space fills quickly.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim to the nearby islets if you are not an experienced swimmer, as currents can change near the rocky channels.

Etiquette

Public beach etiquette applies; noise should be kept at a minimum out of respect for nearby residents. No facilities for waste disposal exist on-site, so visitors must carry all trash away.
