Founded in 993 AD by Prince Boleslav II and Bishop Adalbert of Prague, it is the oldest Benedictine monastery in Bohemia.
The monastery brewery, known as Klášterní pivovar Břevnov, is one of the oldest in the Czech Republic, first documented in the 13th century.
The Romanesque crypt contains the original foundations of the monastery church, dating back to the late 10th century.
The interior of St. Margaret’s Basilica features frescoes by Cosmas Damian Asam and sculptures by Karl Josef Hiernle.
The complex hosts the annual Břevnov Market, a long-standing tradition dating back to the 13th century.
The monastery was used as a barracks and later a military hospital during the 18th century, significantly damaging its original structure before its Baroque reconstruction.
It is home to a functioning monastic community that follows the Rule of Saint Benedict.
The 'Orangerie' building, located in the monastery gardens, dates back to the 18th century and is now used for cultural exhibitions.
Břevnov Monastery is the oldest male Benedictine monastery in Bohemia, founded in 993 AD. The complex currently serves as an active religious site, a hotel, and a center for cultural events. The site features the Basilica of St. Margaret, a prominent example of high Baroque architecture. A working brewery operates on-site, continuing a tradition that dates back to the monastery's origins. The grounds include a historic park, the Markéta garden, and a Romanesque crypt from the 11th century. Visitors can access the monastic brewery, the courtyard, and designated exhibition areas. The site is a registered National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic. It remains a functioning monastic community under the Benedictine order.
