It serves as a vital habitat for endemic alpine flora including the Yushan juniper and alpine azaleas. Hikers access the site via the Xueshan Main Peak trail, which requires passing through the Black Forest. The site provides geological evidence of Taiwan's historical tectonic uplift and past climatic shifts.
