Overview

Fort Spitzberg-Ostróg is the central stronghold of the Srebrna Góra Fortress complex, constructed by the Kingdom of Prussia between 1765 and 1777. It is one of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe, designed to defend the border against the Austrian Empire. The site features a massive polygonal structure with a central courtyard, casemates, and defensive moats. It remained unconquered during the Napoleonic Wars in 1807, serving as a critical defensive point. Today, the site functions as a museum and heritage center detailing Prussian military engineering. The fort is situated atop a mountain peak, providing expansive views of the Owl Mountains (Góry Sowie). Visitors explore subterranean tunnels, bastions, and historical weapon displays.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking shoes, as the internal floors are often uneven, cold, and damp.

Bring a warm layer even in summer, as the temperature inside the stone casemates remains significantly lower than outside.

Allow extra time for the walk from the lower access points up to the main fortress entrance.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to access the unlit or sealed sections of the defensive tunnels without a registered guide.

Good to know

Tours are conducted year-round, but specific sections of the underground tunnels may be closed during winter months due to bat protection regulations.

Etiquette

Respect the historical restricted areas and avoid touching fragile masonry; stay on marked paths during guided tours.
