Overview

The Minor Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bardo is a prominent Baroque pilgrimage site located in the Sudetes foothills of southwestern Poland. The current structure, built between 1686 and 1704, replaced several earlier churches on the same site. It houses the 12th-century Romanesque figure of the Virgin Mary, known as the 'Guardian of the Faith' and considered the oldest sculpture of the Madonna in Lower Silesia. The interior features significant wood carvings, including a monumental high altar designed by Michael Klahr the Elder. The basilica holds the title of a minor basilica, granted by the Vatican in recognition of its religious and historical significance. The site remains a primary destination for pilgrims within the Diocese of Świdnica. Its architecture is characterized by a prominent central nave and ornate ceiling frescoes.
