Overview

The Basilica of the Visitation of Our Lady in Wambierzyce is a Baroque pilgrimage church often referred to as the Silesian Jerusalem. It was constructed between 1715 and 1723 on a site where a wooden chapel stood since the 13th century. The facade is defined by its dramatic central axis with three imposing towers and a series of expansive stone staircases leading to the entrance. The interior features a central nave surrounded by numerous side chapels, housing a 14th-century wooden statuette of the Virgin Mary. The basilica complex is integrated into the surrounding topography, which was landscaped to represent the topography of Jerusalem. It remains an active site of Catholic worship and a significant center for Marian devotion in southwestern Poland.
