Overview

The Fountain of Neptune is one of four distinct 18th-century fountains situated at the corners of Rynok Square in the Lviv historic center. Created by sculptor Hartman Witwer in 1793, the ensemble features the Roman god of the sea surrounded by stone sea creatures. The fountain, alongside its counterparts dedicated to Amphitrite, Adonis, and Diana, replaced original wooden water-conduit structures. Each fountain sits on an octagonal basin carved from limestone. The central figure of Neptune holds a trident, symbolizing the city's historical connection to trade and water supply. These monuments are central to Lviv's UNESCO-listed Rynok Square architectural layout.
