The Niji-no-Matsubara forest below is designated as one of Japan's three major pine groves.
The forest contains approximately one million black pine trees planted for coastal wind protection.
The shape of the pine forest is locally likened to a rainbow due to its curved coastal trajectory.
The mountain is historically linked to the legend of Princess Sayo, who reportedly stood here to wave goodbye to her lover.
The observation deck area features a dedicated area for 'Kawara-nage,' the traditional throwing of ceramic tiles for good luck.
The Mt. Kagamiyama Observation Deck provides an elevated vantage point overlooking the Niji-no-Matsubara pine forest and Karatsu Bay. The deck sits at an altitude of approximately 284 meters on the summit of Mount Kagami. From the summit, the pine grove stretches along the coastline in a distinct crescent shape. The area is part of a larger park complex accessible via a winding mountain road. The observation platform is situated near the Kagami Shrine’s upper grounds. It serves as a vantage point for viewing the Karatsu Castle in the distance and the islands of the Genkai Sea.
The railing at the northern edge of the observation deck provides the most unobstructed panoramic view of the pine forest and sea.
Bring a windbreaker or additional layer, as temperatures are noticeably cooler and breezier at the summit than in the town center.
Visit the small gift shop and cafe located adjacent to the parking area for local snacks.
The parking area is expansive, but the best views require a short walk to the edge of the plateau.
Do not attempt to walk up the mountain road from the city center, as it lacks pedestrian sidewalks and has high traffic.
