Overview

Cape Zanpa Lighthouse is a white, cylindrical structure situated on the westernmost point of Yomitan Village in Okinawa. It rises 31 meters above the rugged coral limestone cliffs of the Zanpa Cape. The structure serves as an active aid to navigation with a light that is visible for approximately 18.5 nautical miles. Visitors can climb the internal spiral staircase to reach the external observation deck at the summit. The site offers expansive views of the East China Sea and, on clear days, the islands of Kerama and Aguni. The surrounding area features a public park with walking paths along the coastal precipices. The lighthouse is one of the few in Japan that allows public interior access to the top. It was established in 1974 to guide vessels through the dangerous waters surrounding the cape.

Insider tips

Bring a pair of binoculars to enhance the visibility of distant islands on the horizon.

Wear closed-toe, comfortable walking shoes as the surrounding limestone paths can be uneven and sharp.

Visit on a weekday to avoid the larger crowds that congregate on the cape during weekends.

What to avoid

Do not wander off the marked paths near the cliff edges, as the limestone rock can be unstable and dangerous.

Good to know

May close temporarily during periods of severe weather, such as typhoons.

Etiquette

Visitors must be able to climb the steep, narrow spiral staircase independently; refrain from running inside the tower.
