Interesting facts
1

The name 'Gugok' translates to 'nine bends,' referring to the winding shape of the valley landscape.

2

During the coldest months of winter, the falls are intentionally managed for ice climbing competitions.

3

Munbae Village, located nearby, is a high-altitude settlement historically known for traditional Korean fermented foods and rustic mountain cuisine.

4

The water source for the falls originates from the upper ridges of Bonghwasan mountain, resulting in reduced flow during prolonged dry periods.

5

The hiking path serves as a trailhead for the longer, more strenuous climb to the summit of Bonghwasan.

6

The rock cliff face at the falls is categorized as a specific geological feature formed by long-term erosion.

Overview

Gugok Falls Tourist Site is anchored by a 50-meter-tall waterfall cascading down a sheer rock cliff in the Bonghwasan mountain range. The trail to the waterfall is a 20-minute, mostly flat walk covering approximately 870 meters through a forested valley. The site is a designated base for ice climbing in winter when the waterfall freezes solid into a vertical column. The area features the Munbae Village, a small settlement located at the top of a steep hiking path accessible from the waterfall site. The tourist destination includes an outdoor stage, a campfire site, and various rock formations along the valley stream. Vegetation in the area is predominantly mixed forest, providing dense canopy cover throughout the approach trail.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip, as the trail surface consists of packed dirt and gravel.

Bring water, as the main amenities are concentrated near the entrance rather than along the trail.

Continue past the waterfall to the steep 'Gogae' mountain pass if you wish to reach the traditional restaurants in Munbae Village.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the falls or cliffs without official permits and professional gear.

Good to know

The trail to the waterfall remains open year-round, though sections may be restricted during severe weather alerts.

Etiquette
