Overview

The Yıldırım Beyazıt Tomb houses the remains of the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I, who reigned from 1389 to 1402. Built in 1406 by his son Emir Süleyman Çelebi, the structure is a quintessential example of Early Ottoman architectural transitions. It features a large central dome resting on a square base with a wide porch supported by pillars. The interior showcases original 15th-century tile work and distinct stone masonry. The tomb is part of a larger complex known as the Yıldırım Kulliye, which includes a mosque, a madrasa, and an imaret. It is located on a prominent ridge in the Yıldırım district, overlooking the Bursa city center. The building survived significant damage during the 1855 Bursa earthquake and underwent multiple restoration efforts. It remains a significant site for studying the shift from Seljuk influence to purely Ottoman imperial funerary aesthetics.
