Overview

Hawa Mahal is a five-story pyramidal edifice constructed in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The structure is built from red and pink sandstone, designed to resemble the crown of the Hindu deity Krishna. Its distinctive honeycomb facade contains 953 small windows, known as jharokhas, which were decorated with intricate latticework. The primary architectural purpose of the facade was to allow royal ladies to observe street festivals and daily life without being seen by the public. The design utilizes the Venturi effect, allowing cool air to pass through the chambers, which provides natural air conditioning during high temperatures. It lacks a conventional foundation, yet remains standing due to its curved, lightweight design. The interior consists of small chambers with narrow corridors rather than expansive royal halls. It functions as a monument and museum, housing a collection of artifacts reflecting 18th-century Rajput culture.
