Overview

The Mt. Fremont Fire Lookout is a historic structure located at 7,181 feet elevation within Mount Rainier National Park. Constructed in 1934, it served as a vital station for wildfire detection for the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service. The lookout is perched on a jagged rocky ridge, offering unobstructed views of Mount Rainier’s north face, the Burroughs Mountain, and the Sourdough Mountains. Visitors reach the site via a 5.6-mile round-trip trail that begins at the Sunrise Visitor Center area. The building features a classic L-4 cab design with a 14-foot by 14-foot cabin atop a stone foundation. It is one of four remaining fire lookouts in Mount Rainier National Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Insider tips

Bring layers, as alpine weather can shift rapidly and temperatures on the ridge are significantly lower than at the trailhead.

Carry trekking poles to assist with the rocky terrain and steep segments near the summit.

Start your hike early to avoid afternoon lightning storms, which are frequent in high-elevation areas during summer.

What to avoid

Attempting the hike during spring or early summer when significant snowfields make the trail difficult to follow and increase avalanche risk.

Good to know

Accessible only during the summer season when the Sunrise Road is open; typically closed from late autumn through early summer due to heavy snow.

Etiquette

Stay on the designated path to protect fragile alpine vegetation; do not climb on or deface the historic lookout structure.
