Overview

Tolmie Peak Fire Lookout is a historic 1932 structure located in Mount Rainier National Park, situated at an elevation of 5,939 feet. It provides a direct, close-up vantage point of the Mowich Lake area and the northwestern face of Mount Rainier. The lookout remains one of the few surviving fire observation stations within the park, having been used for forest fire detection until the 1970s. The trail to the lookout is a 7.5-mile round-trip hike with approximately 1,600 feet of elevation gain. The structure is perched on a rocky promontory overlooking Eunice Lake. It is not currently staffed for fire watch but remains a primary destination for hikers seeking high-altitude views of the Cascade Range.

Insider tips

Carry the ten essentials, as the exposed ridge is prone to rapid weather shifts.

Start your hike early to secure parking at the limited-capacity Mowich Lake trailhead.

Bring extra layers; temperatures at the peak are significantly colder than at the trailhead.

What to avoid

Attempting the hike during early spring when hazardous snow bridges and avalanche risks persist on the north-facing slopes.

Good to know

Access is restricted to summer and early autumn; the Mowich Lake Road typically remains closed to vehicles due to snow until late June or July.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect fragile alpine meadows; leave no trace of waste or food items.
