Overview

The Shri Vishnupad Temple is an ancient stone structure situated on the banks of the Phalgu River in Gaya, India. Its most sacred feature is a 40-centimeter-long footprint of Lord Vishnu embedded in solid block basalt rock. The current octagonal structure was reconstructed in 1787 by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. The temple features 44 pyramidal-shaped stone pillars that support the central mandapa. A large silver-plated brass flag, known as a dhwaja, flies atop the spire. The interior sanctum houses the footprints, locally referred to as the 'Vedi,' surrounded by a silver-plated basin. The temple serves as the primary site for Pind Daan, a Hindu ritual performed for the salvation of ancestors. The architecture reflects the Nagara style, characterized by its distinct shikhara.
