Overview

Jodo-ji in Ono, Hyogo, is a Buddhist temple belonging to the Jodo-shu sect, founded in 1190 by the monk Chogen. Its primary structure, the Jodo-do, is a National Treasure renowned for its unique Daibutsuyo architectural style, characterized by massive tie beams and a complex bracket system. The temple houses a towering Amida Buddha triad carved by the celebrated sculptor Kaikei. When sunlight strikes the Amida Buddha statue at sunset, it creates a striking visual effect reflecting the Western Pure Land. The site serves as an essential example of Kamakura-period architectural evolution in Japan. The temple complex includes the Yakushi-do hall and a small museum preserving regional historical artifacts.
