Overview

Himeji Castle is Japan's largest and best-preserved example of 17th-century prototypical castle architecture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its sophisticated wooden defense systems and elegant white plaster walls. The complex comprises 83 buildings, including the main keep, interconnected by a series of gates and winding stone walls. Known as the 'White Heron Castle' due to its appearance, it is one of only twelve original Japanese castles that survived the post-feudal era without destruction by war, fire, or earthquake. The structure features a complex wooden post-and-beam construction with a central pillar running from the basement to the top roof. It served as a strategic military stronghold and a symbol of the daimyo's power during the Edo period. The site is currently fully operational and maintained through ongoing traditional restoration techniques.
