Overview

Vrelo Bune is the source of the Buna River, which emerges from a massive 200-meter vertical limestone cliff in Blagaj. It is one of Europe's largest and most powerful karst springs, with an average discharge of approximately 43,000 liters per second. Adjacent to the spring is the Blagaj Tekke, a 16th-century Dervish monastery built directly into the rock face. The spring water maintains a constant temperature of approximately 8 degrees Celsius year-round. The site functions as a popular destination for dining, where restaurants are positioned along the riverbanks to capitalize on the water flow and views of the cliff. The water is drinkable and considered exceptionally pure. The location holds historical significance as a site of religious devotion and traditional Ottoman-era architecture.

Insider tips

Bring a light jacket even in summer, as the immediate vicinity of the water and cliff shadow creates a localized microclimate.

Wear sturdy footwear with good grip, as the stone paths near the water can become slippery due to moisture.

Visit the viewing platform across the river for a clearer perspective of the entire cliff and cave mouth.

What to avoid

Eating at the very first restaurants near the entrance, which are often the most crowded; walk slightly further along the river for a quieter experience.

Etiquette
