The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a subterranean prehistoric burial site dating back to approximately 4000–2500 BC. Architects carved the limestone structure to mimic the interior of above-ground megalithic temples, complete with corbelled ceilings and imitation doorways. Excavations recovered the remains of over 7,000 individuals alongside pottery, beads, and stone amulets. The site features unique red ochre wall paintings, some of the oldest preserved in Malta. Due to its delicate microclimate, the site is strictly climate-controlled to prevent structural and biological decay. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its exceptional preservation and historical significance regarding prehistoric funerary practices.
