The deepest part of the fort contains 16th-century magazines carved directly into the rock to store gunpowder.
Fort St Angelo is a bastioned fort located at the tip of the Birgu peninsula, commanding the entrance to the Grand Harbour of Malta. The site originated as a medieval castle known as the Castrum Maris, which served as the seat of the Filippo di Malta in the 13th century. It became the primary headquarters for the Order of St. John during the Great Siege of 1565. The structure features extensive modifications from the 16th-century rebuilding by the Knights, including multi-level artillery bastions. It served as a stone frigate, HMS Egmont, for the British Royal Navy between 1912 and 1979. The fort currently contains historical exhibits detailing the military history of the Maltese archipelago. Its tactical position provides clear sightlines across the Grand Harbour towards Valletta and Senglea. Visitors can access various levels, including the upper bastions and the subterranean chambers. It is managed by Heritage Malta as a site of national importance.

Wear comfortable, flat walking shoes as the terrain includes uneven historical stone, steep staircases, and inclines.
Bring sun protection and water, as much of the upper fortification is fully exposed to the elements with little shade.
Allow time to walk the perimeter of the ramparts for a complete view of the Three Cities and Valletta.
Do not attempt to walk to the fort from Sliema; use the harbour ferry or water taxi to reach Birgu directly.
Closed on Mondays during the winter season.
