Imperial Gate, Osmangazi Mahallesi, 16020, Osmangazi, 2. Osman Gazi Cd. No:22, 16040 Osmangazi̇/Bursa, Türkiye
The gate represents the primary historical portal into the upper citadel of Bursa, historically controlling access to administrative and royal zones.
Portions of the masonry incorporate recycled architectural elements, known as spolia, sourced from earlier Roman and Byzantine structures in the region.
The structure underwent significant restoration following major historical earthquakes that periodically affected the Bursa region.
It is positioned directly adjacent to the Tophane Clock Tower and the panoramic viewing terraces overlooking the modern city expanse.
The Imperial Gate, known locally as Saltanat Kapısı, serves as the historic main entrance to the ancient fortifications of Bursa's old city. Constructed during the Roman period and subsequently reinforced by the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, the stone archway marks the threshold of the citadel. It stands near the tombs of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi, the founders of the Ottoman Empire. The surrounding district of Tophane preserves much of its medieval layout, cobblestone streets, and traditional architecture. Visitors can observe original defensive masonry, ancient inscriptions, and defensive loopholes integrated into the structure over successive centuries.
