Overview

The Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Hejnice is a prominent Baroque pilgrimage site located at the foothills of the Jizera Mountains. Originally established as a wooden chapel in the 13th century, the current complex dates primarily from the early 18th century. It was designed by the architect Thomas Hiebel and features a three-nave basilica layout. The monastery grounds currently serve as a multifunctional International Center for Spiritual Renewal. The site houses a famous 13th-century wooden statue of the Black Madonna of Hejnice. Significant restoration efforts were completed in the 1990s and 2000s to repair structural damage from the mid-20th century. The complex includes a notable cemetery where former inhabitants and clergy of the region are interred.
