Interesting facts
1

The park's unique 'horseshoe' shape is formed by a massive, natural tectonic amphitheater that opens directly to the Indian Ocean.

2

Geologists identify the area as a site where ancient oceanic crust (ophiolite) has been pushed above sea level, providing rare visible evidence of plate tectonic subduction.

3

The Cimarinjung waterfall is fed by the Ciletuh River, which creates a sharp contrast against the dark, jagged volcanic rock faces of the amphitheater.

4

Palangpang Beach within the park serves as an entry point for boats exploring the offshore islands and unique coastal geological formations.

5

The park contains fossilized remains dating back to the Paleogene period, providing insights into Indonesia's prehistoric environment.

Overview

Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark is a horseshoe-shaped geological amphitheater located in the Sukabumi Regency of West Java, Indonesia. The area features a complex history of subduction zones and tectonic uplift that exposed ancient oceanic crust. It is characterized by diverse rock formations including Cretaceous-era metamorphic rocks and Eocene-era sediments. The park hosts several prominent waterfalls, such as Curug Cimarinjung, which flows over prehistoric rock cliffs into the Indian Ocean. Geomorphologically, the amphitheater is a rare example of a collapsed volcanic caldera wall eroded by coastal processes. The region supports unique biodiversity adapted to the karst and coastal terrain. It was formally designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2018 to preserve its geological heritage and promote sustainable tourism.

Insider tips

Bring sturdy, non-slip footwear as the terrain near waterfalls and coastal cliffs can be steep, muddy, and uneven.

Pack sufficient drinking water and snacks, as facilities are sparse between the main viewpoints and waterfalls.

Check local weather reports specifically for the Ciemas region, as heavy rain can significantly impact road accessibility.

What to avoid

Attempting to drive standard low-clearance vehicles on the remote mountain access roads during or immediately after heavy rainfall.

Etiquette

Maintain modesty in rural coastal villages, refrain from littering in protected geological zones, and respect local fishing communities.
