Overview

Nehaj Fortress is a 16th-century fortification located on Trbušnjak hill in Senj, Croatia, built in 1558 to defend against Ottoman and Venetian forces. The structure is a cubic-shaped building reaching 18 meters in height and 23 meters in width, featuring walls up to 3.3 meters thick. It served as the headquarters for the Senj Uskoks, a group of rebel soldiers and sailors known for their naval guerrilla tactics. The fortress contains a collection of Glagolitic inscriptions, historical weaponry, and local military artifacts within its museum. Visitors can access the flat roof, which provides a panoramic view of the Adriatic Sea and the islands of Rab, Cres, Krk, and Goli Otok. The interior design includes a central courtyard and several levels connected by narrow stone staircases.

Photo spot

The wide flat roof ramparts offer the best vantage point for 360-degree shots of the Senj coastline and the Velebit mountain range.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes to navigate the uneven stone floors and steep interior staircases.

Bring a light windbreaker even in summer, as the hilltop location is subject to strong gusts of the Velebit bura wind.

Take time to read the placards in the Glagolitic script exhibit for context on the regional history.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the exterior walls; stick to the designated staircases and interior paths for safety.

Good to know

Operations are generally reduced or limited during the winter months.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet volume within the museum galleries and refrain from climbing on the exterior stone battlements.
